1. What is the Society of St. Vincent de Paul?

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is an international organization of laymen and women dedicated to helping the poor through practical works of charity. It is divided into two groups: the Vincentian volunteers and the Central Council.

2. Who are the Vincentians?

People of good will who come from all walks of life, every age group and ethnic background, and are committed to the Society's mission - to help people who in need.

3. Do you have to be Catholic to be helped by the Society or its members?

No, the Society offers material aid, emotional support and spiritual comfort to anyone who demonstrates a genuine need.

4. What is the Central Council?

The Central Council, the professional arm of the Society, manages the Thrift Stores and housing programs and provides support services and technical assistance to the conference members. The Central Council fosters spiritual unity and communication among conferences in a geographic area.

5. Who funds the Society?

The Central Council is funded primarily through the proceeds from Thrift Stores sales, contributions from the community, bequests, and grants.

6. What kind of donations does the Society accept?

Financial donations, new and gently used clothing, furniture, vehicles and boats

7. How do I make a donation?

You may bring your clothing donations to any of the Society's Thrift Stores or drop them off in one of our clothing bins.

To arrange for a furniture pickup, call (516) 746-8250 for Nassau County residents and (631) 858-0380 for Suffolk County residents. 8. How do I arrange for a deduction for donated clothing and used property?

When clothing is donated at our Thrift Store, one of the salespeople in the store will give you a receipt.

If you donate clothing in a donation bin, send a letter to the Society's main office at 249 Broadway, Bethpage, NY 11714. Include the date, location, and number of bags you dispensed or attach an itemized list. The main office will return an acknowledgment of your donation.

9. How do I make a gift of cash, securities, or appreciated property?

Cash contributions may also be sent directly to the main office or your local conference.

To arrange for a gift of securities of appreciated property, contact your accountant or attorney and James Dilts, Executive Director, at the Society's main office - (516) 822-3132.

 

The value of these gifts is a matter for the donor and the government to ascertain.

10. Are contributions tax-deductible?

The Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Contributions are deductible to the extent allowed under the Internal Revenue Service rules.
