The heart and soul of the Society...

Inspired by St. Vincent de Paul, formed by the example of Frederic Ozanam, founder of the Society, the Vincentian men and women are ordinary folks from every walk of life. They are united in their commitment to help the poor, the needy, the lonely and the homeless.

Requests for assistance come from individuals and families, through concerned relatives or friends, or a member of the clergy. The request may be made directly to a Vincentian or by a telephone call to the Central Council. Once a referral has been received, the Vincentians from the nearest conference will make a home visit.

The home visit distinguishes the Society of St. Vincent de Paul from all other organizations serving the poor. The manner in which help is offered and provided is often more important than the relief given. That personal touch - the one-to-one encounter with a needy person or family - is the balm that will help the healing process begin.

The Vincentians bring with them all the resources of the conference and the Central Council, whatever is needed to help resolve the problem, to make people's lives better. Relief is offered without passing judgment and with no strings attached.

Currently, there are 1,030 Vincentians, 53 conferences serving the poor and needy from Nassau County to the easternmost shores of Long Island.

The active Vincentians are joined in their mission of charity by the Samaritans in Prayer…men and women who are committed to the work of the Society but cannot be active Vincentians. The Samaritans pray for the Vincentians and the people they serve.
