Inspired by St. Vincent de Paul, formed by the example of Frederic Ozanam, founder of the Society, Vincentians

are ordinary men and women from every walk of life. They are united in their commitment to help the poor.

The Central Council provides support services and professional assistance to Vincentians, administers

staffed programs and serves as a liaison between the Vincentians and other divisions of the Society.Together,

Vincentians and the Central Council provide temporary emergency assistance to people who are in financial crisis.

Requests for assistance come from individuals and families, through concerned relatives or friends, or a member

of the clergy. The request may be made directly to a Vincentian or by a telephone call to the Central Council.

Once a referral has been received, it is transferred to the Conference nearest the person in need and the

Vincentians from that Conference will proceed with a home visit and follow-up.

The home visit distinguishes the Society of St. Vincent de Paul from all other organizations serving the poor.

The manner in which help is offered and provided is often more important than the relief given. That personal

touch, the one-to-one encounter with a needy person or family, is the balm that helps the healing process begin.

The Vincentians bring with them all the resources of the Conference and the Central Council, whatever is needed

to help resolve the problem and make people's lives better. Relief is offered without passing judgment and with

no strings attached.

Currently, there are 1,200 Vincentians within the Long Island Council's region, 52 Conferences serving the poor

and needy from Nassau County to the easternmost shores of Long Island.
