Emergency and transitional housing...

The Society operates three homes for the homeless on Long Island.

The needs of the residents in each program are somewhat different; however, the programs are similar - emphasizing education, employment, personal responsibilty, conflict resolutions, knowing how and when to ask for help, family reunification, maintaining their own housing, support counseling, advocacy and developing appropriate skills for living.

Parenting skills are integrated into group discussions in an effort to emphasize the men's and women's responsibilities toward their children.

The residents in all programs are provided with the following:

housing
financial assistance
nutritious food
clothing
AA/NA orientation
tutoring in reading and math
complete medical exam
HIV counseling
employment counseling
referral outpatient programs
personal goal setting
spiritual guidance

Though nonsectarian, all the programs have a spiritual dimension which is a key element in any successful recovery program. Prayers and readings from Scripture or other religious or inspirational books take place before meals and "house meetings." These spiritual exercises orient the residents to resources that are life sustaining, especially when the men are going through a difficult period.
